Mother's Day Out Program

 

New Course!Mother’s Day Out Camps

 

These day camps will run each Thursday from 9-2:30pm on the days listed below.  You may sign up for one day or for all of them!  There will be a different theme each week for children in K-3rd grades.  Children should bring 1 snack for mid-morning and a sack lunch.  Please do not send items that need to be heated.  Each camp is $25 or sign up for all five for $100!  Pre-registration is required as we are accepting no more than 20 students each day.

Art

 

Elementary Drawing (1st-6th grades) - Have a youngster that likes to draw?  Want to see him expand his abilities? Learn the basics or advance to the next level of progress in their journey of expression through drawing. We will be using felt tip markers as media of choice for the week while experimenting with a variety of subject matter. Material list will be available on-line May 1st.

Calligraphy (7-12th grades) - Handwriting is an art form using line, one of the most basic elements of art.  But today, with the touch of a key, the computer edits fonts as easily as changing your mind.  Is beautiful handwriting a lost art that has been relegated to a quaint custom of the past?  Come learn the basics of calligraphy and design while working towards creating a final work of art all done by your own hand.   Material list will be available on-line May 1st.

Drawing in Pen and Ink (7-12th grades) - A drawing made in pen and ink is unlike that made from any other instrument.  With the understanding that pen and ink requires a diligent development of drawing skills, the student will start with the most basic exercises – drawing straight, parallel lines – and move to the more subtle methods of creating illusions of tone, depth, texture, and shape with lines alone.  Come learn some of the basics this bold dynamic media has to offer.  Material list will be available on-line May 1st.

Adult Art

 

Drawing for Beginners (ages 18 and above) –This 8 session course will introduce the basic techniques of drawing based on Betty Edwards’ book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.  Students will need to bring a sketchbook and drawing pencils every week. A supply list will be posted on-line before class begins.

Advanced Art (ages 18 and above) – An 8 session course designed to help advance the individual’s talent in the desired field of study, drawing or painting.  Student must meet with instructor prior to class to develop a course of study.  A supply list will be determined individually before class begins.

Business

We are holding this camp later in the summer so that the store will be really busy with a large variety of activities for your children to experience as bookstore interns!

 

Capitalism for KIDS (9-12year olds)This informative and fun course teaches skills kids can use the rest of their lives – and equally important, helps them realize that the dream of owing a business is possible!  Students will have fun playing the Disney “Hot Shot Business” Internet simulation game where they will learn what it means to be an entrepreneur.  Students gain experience with the nuts and bolts of designing and operating their own businesses – a skateboard factory, a comic book shop, a pet spa, a landscaping service, and a candy factory.  Combined with class discussions and one day of practical hands–on experience running and operating the HEP Bookstore, this class will be a “real-life” learning experience.  Class limited to 11 students.

Computer Science

 

Computer Applications (7-12th grades) - This course includes Internet Security, Windows, Word-Processing, Spreadsheet, and Databases.  Textbook required and may be purchased at HEP Bookstore.  Bring a USB 2.0 Flash Drive (to use), a pencil, and a notebook to class.  This course counts as ½-credit on the high school transcript for 8-12th graders.    We can only accept 11 students per class.

Computer Graphics (7-12th grades) - This course covers: Webpage Design and HTML code, Computer Graphics, and Presentation Slides.  Bring pencil and a notebook to class.  This course counts as ½-credit on the high school transcript for 8-12th graders.   We can only accept 11 students per class.

Culinary Arts Camp

 

Cooking Class (7-12th grades) - Sugar and spice and lots of things nice, put it in a bowl for dinner tonight!  This course is an introduction to the Art of Culinary and its history with the opportunity to taste your experience. There will be an iron chef competition at the end of the week.  Class size is limited. Cost includes all food supplies.   Pick up a copy of supplies and equipment needed for the course from the front desk.

Foreign Language Camps

 

 

 

Spanish I Intensive Course (7th-12th grades) -  Earn credit for two semesters of Spanish in only three weeks. Students will be presented with vocabulary and grammatical structures. Techniques used include TPR (Total Physical Response), TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), long-term memory techniques, acting, storytelling, reading, translation and conversation. This class will quickly jumpstart the student of Spanish on his way to fluency and prepare him or her for success in upper level Spanish courses. Students should bring a lunch or have permission to leave campus for 1 hour for lunch.  This course counts 1 credit on the high school transcript.

Language Arts

 

New Course!Wow Mom!  I didn’t know writing could be so much fun!    (4th-5th grades) Are you a poet, but didn’t know it? Through a variety of fun poetry writing and art projects, students will create and explore writing with an artistic flair!  We might even set some of our work to music.  On the last day, we will have a coffee house to present our work to our adoring audience of parents.   Bring a notebook and pencil and be willing to let your inner poet lose.   Limited to 10 students who want to have FUN while learning to write.

Middle School Writing Workshop (6-7th grades) The writing process, brainstorming, writing, and editing are the topics of this short week long course.  Students will learn how to write a descriptive, narrative, and a compare/contrast paragraph.  Students will also learn how to write a paragraph length analysis of a short story.  Bring a notebook and pencil.  Limited to 15 students.

5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP (8-12th grades) - This short five-day workshop will teach the basics of five-paragraph essay writing and how to write an essay for the SAT test.  Students will learn the basic structure of the essay through a visual drawing, practice on each part of the essay, and by actually writing one essay and outlining a second essay. Students will learn how to expand this “skeleton” to a longer research paper or condense it for a short essay, such as the SAT essay.  On Friday, a short SAT-type essay will be done in 25 minutes just like on the SAT test!   This easy and interesting presentation will help even the “grumpiest” writer learn that writing can be easily mastered when given the proper tools!  Mastery of the 5-paragraph essay will help students be successful in both high school and college. Absolutely no one younger than 8th grade may attend this accelerated presentation.  This course is not recommended for students who struggle with English or who do not have mastery of basic paragraph writing. FORMAT WRITING workbook required ($22) and may be purchased at the HEP Bookstore.   On the first day of class students should also bring 3 juvenile library books on one of the 7 planets in the solar system (excluding Earth or Pluto).  Class is limited to 15 students.

Creative Writing Class (grades 6-12) - Stories are everywhere, you just have to learn to "see" them. Let your imagination soar with a class in Creative Writing. Students will learn the principles of writing and storytelling.

Research Writing Class (grades 10-12) - "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!" Research papers can be daunting unless you know where to start. The approach is broken down into simple, easy to follow steps that remove the stress that comes with large writing projects. Students should understand the MLA format and 5 paragraph essays.

Dr. Jones has changed the name of the Super Math classes to Accelerated Math classes.

 

Accelerated-Math Three:  Facts-Master For students 6-12 years old who understand addition and subtraction concepts although their skills may be far from perfect.   They will master all basic skills, borrowing, carrying, multiplication, and division concepts, as well as rapid calculation skills and memory training.  By the end of this course, students who began not knowing how to multiply will be doing many advanced math computations faster than an electronic calculator!  Prerequisite:  Must understand addition/subtraction concepts.  To graduate:  Facts-Master ribbon in add/sub.    All Accelerated Math supplies are available at the HEP Bookstore.

Accelerated-Math Five:  Factor-Master – For teens and advanced pre-teens who can already multiply and divide.  The course teaches mastery of all math operations; powers, factoring, and signed numbers.  Students continue to increase their knowledge of fractions, rapid calculation skills, and memory training.    All Accelerated Math supplies are available at the HEP Bookstore.

LEGORobotics/Engineering - Ready for more robotics?  Expand your robotics skills with more building, more programming, and more strategy.  Learn and practice science and engineering skills with Legos and other materials.  Ages: 8-14years old. The class is limited to 12 students, and admission is limited to instructor approval.  Parents are invited to attend classes, learn about the competition for next fall, and help coach/chaperone!

Advanced Robotics/Engineering - Ready for more robotics?   Expand your robotics skills with more building, more programming, and more strategy.  Learn and practice science and engineering skills with Legos and other materials.  Learn how to use the Lego sensors and how to program your robot more effectively.   Ages:  8-14 years old. Pre-requisite for joining: previous competition team member or attended beginner robotics camp.  The class is limited to 8 students, and admission is limited to instructor approval.  Parents are invited to attend classes to learn about robotics and all of the competitions available during the school year.

CUT-UP CAMP (7-12th grades)  – Curious about worms?  Eyeballs?  Skeletons?  Skin?  Guts?  And other yucky things?  Are you yearning to learn how a fetal pig looks inside and out?   Then we have just the camp for you.  Our resident mad scientist will conduct five days of dissection fun. We provide all of the equipment and supplies.  Bring a notebook and pen; wear comfortable OLD clothes and closed toe shoes.  This class may be used to supplement a high school home taught biology course.

STUDY SKILLS

 

HOW TO STUDY SMARTER, NOT HARDER! (7-12th graders) - Feeling organized?  Don't quite know how to tackle that load of homework?  Want to learn how to study smarter, not harder?  Then this three hour workshop is for you!  Mrs. Juren will focus on 3 ideas that, if implemented, will turn you into a SUPERSTAR student!  First we will examine the difference between an average student and a SUPERSTAR student.  Next we will learn how to create a Master Schedule to organize our school work around our lives.  Lastly, we will learn how to annotate (take notes) with a Learning Log.  This class is recommended for everyone who wants to move from mediocrity to excellence!  Bring a spiral notebook (required for a demonstration activity) and a pen.  Parents may attend, but are encouraged to attend the parent version.  Parents must pay the same fee as a student attending this course.  Reservations required.  The HOW TO STUDY SMARTER, NOT HARDER! book is available at HEP Bookstore for $24.95.

HOW TO STUDY SMARTER, NOT HARDER! For Parents only- This four hour course is for parents only; no students may attend this session as it will be taught from a parent perspective.   The course will cover all of the material covered in the student version, plus parents will learn how to create a lesson plan.  Reservations required.

GETTING READY FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE SEMINAR- If you have a 7th grade or older student, then this class is for you.  During this informative 3 hour seminar, Joanne Juren will discuss many topics pertinent to the student just entering the high school years.  Topics include: goal setting; course guidelines from 7-12th grade; the 4-year Plan; the high school transcript; extra-curricular courses and activities; job co-op; testing for high school/college; scholarships; and many more topics of interest!  Each parent will create 4-year plan for his/her student(s).  There will be plenty of time for questions and answers!  With one paid adult, the student may attend for free.  Reservations required.  The GETTING READY FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE book is now available at the HEP Bookstore for $29.95.
