Registration Information:

 

The official HEP of Texas, Inc. registration form must be completely filled out, including the emergency information, health information and parent release. Failure to complete the form will result in a delay in registration.   No registration is considered official until payment for classes has been made.  All summer courses must be paid for at the time of registration. Registration is first come, first served.  HEP of Texas reserves the right to limit  enrollment and to change times or dates if needed due to circumstances not under our control. Camps are open to homeschool, public school, and private school student.  Camps are grouped by subject.  The instructors, dates, times, costs and descriptions are listed for each camp/workshop.

Art

 

Elementary Art - Students will experiment with various art forms including:  drawing, painting, and various kinds of sculpture.  The purpose of the course is to introduce students to art and to stimulate an interest in art.  The instructor will provide a supply list on the first day of class.   Come prepared with a sketchbook and 2B drawing pencil.

High School Art - Students will explore the elements of art: color, line, form, space, value and texture and discover how they were used throughout history and how they can be used today.  Students will create their own artworks with a selection of different media and techniques in the areas such as: watercolor, acrylics, pencil, pen and ink, textiles and sculpture.   Students may take this course multiple times and each semester counts ½ credit on the high school transcript.  The instructor will provide a supply list on the first day of class.   Come prepared with a sketchbook and drawing pencil (2B).

Business

 

Capitalism for KIDS (9-12year olds) – This informative and fun course teaches skills kids can use the rest of their lives – and equally important, helps them realize that the dream of owing a business is possible!  Students will have fun playing the Disney “Hot Shot Business” Internet simulation game where they will learn what it means to be an entrepreneur.  Students gain experience with the nuts and bolts of designing and operating their own businesses – a skateboard factory, a comic book shop, a pet spa, a landscaping service, and a candy factory.  Combined with class discussions and one day of practical hands–on experience running and operating the HEP Bookstore, this class will be a “real-life” learning experience.  Class limited to 11 students.  Can take 2 more students.

Computer Science

 

Computer Applications (7-12th grades) - This course includes Internet Security, Windows, Word-Processing, Spreadsheet, and Databases.  Textbook required and may be purchased at HEP Bookstore.  Bring a USB 2.0 Flash Drive (to use), a pencil, and a notebook to class.  This course counts as ½-credit on the high school transcript for 8-12th graders.    We can only accept 11 students per class.

Computer Graphics (7-12th grades)  - This course covers: Webpage Design and HTML code, Computer Graphics, and Presentation Slides.  Bring pencil and a notebook to class.  Each semester counts as ½-credit on the high school transcript for 8-12th graders.   We can only accept 11 students per class.

Critical Thinking Skills

 

THINKING OUTSIDE THE PLANET (3rd-5th grades) – Blast off this summer with a fun, creative camp designed to teach critical thinking and problem solving skills!  Students will learn through creative, hands-on thinking activities.  Games, projects, and more help students learn to think outside the box as they work together.  Students will develop reasoning skills, all while brainstorming ways to get a crippled spaceship back to earth!

History

MEDIEVAL CAMP (1-5th grades)  - Step into the world of Knights and Princesses as you venture into the medieval times.  This camp will be an exciting experience for both the young princess and the knight in training as they explore the medieval world through a multi-sensory approach.  The princesses will explore creative movement through authentic medieval dance steps and music.  Some crafts and activities will have a medieval theme, while others will focus on modern-day princesses.  Knights in training will learn about the art of chivalry, explore weapons and armor, and learn about how to become a knight. Knights will create several fun crafts.  All campers will learn about the medieval times, enjoy a medieval feast on the last day of camp, play medieval games, participate in medieval sing-a-longs, and see a fencing demonstration.

Language Arts

 

Beginning Writing Fun (2nd-3rd grades) - In this exciting introduction to writing, students will learn through hands-on, creative activities. Students will practice both descriptive, journal, and short story writing and discover it can be fun! Bring a notebook, pencil, and a picture from a favorite family vacation to the first day of class.

Middle School Writing Workshop (6-8th grades)

During the middle school years, it is important for students to develop strong paragraph writing skills through both paragraphing and creative writing.  This 5-day workshop will focus on the basics of paragraph writing including the writing process, how to organize a paragraph, and how to write different types of paragraphs.  Students will also have fun with creative writing by creating a short story and poems.  Students will discover that writing can be FUN!  Taught by an experienced English teacher, this course is a must before students tackle the 5 Paragraph Essay and high school English!

5 PARAGRAPH ESSAY WRITING WORKSHOP (8-12th grades).  This short five-day workshop will teach the basics of five-paragraph essay writing and how to write an essay for the SAT test.  Students will learn the basic structure of the essay through a visual drawing, practice on each part of the essay, and by actually writing one essay and outlining a second essay.  On Friday, a short SAT-type essay will be done in 25 minutes just like on the SAT test!   This easy and interesting presentation will help even the “grumpiest” writer learn that writing can be easily mastered when given the proper tools!  Mastery of the 5-paragraph essay will help students be successful in both high school and college. Absolutely no one younger than 8th grade may attend this accelerated presentation.  This course is not recommended for students who struggle with English or who do not have mastery of basic paragraph writing. FORMAT WRITING workbook required  ($22) and may be purchased at the HEP Bookstore.   On the first day of class students should also bring 3 juvenile library books on one of the 7 planets in the solar system (excluding Earth or Pluto.  Class limited to 15 students.

Research Paper Workshop (10-12th grades) - One of the most important high school writing experiences is learning how to write a college level informational research paper. Identifying an appropriate topic, framing the abstract, conducting the research, taking notes, citing sources, and writing and refining the paper are the major steps that will be covered during this short three week course.  Students will attend class on Mondays and Wednesdays for instruction, supervision, and counseling.  They will spend the remainder of the week working at home on the research paper.  A rough draft will be critiqued and the final copy will be graded.  Taught by an experienced English teacher, this course will equip the high school student for future research assignments.  Other topics to be covered include:  plagiarism, the persuasive research paper, and the literary research paper.  Book:  FORMAT WRITING ($22 – may be purchased at HEP Bookstore).

DEBATE CAMP - (12 years and up)

This short workshop will introduce the beginner debater to the fundamentals of debate and research.  No debate or speech experience required.  STRATEGIC DEBATE textbook required and may be purchased at the HEP Bookstore.  Students who complete this course will be eligible for Tournament Debate in the fall.

Math

Please note that Super Math 3 and 5 are taught together in the same room at the same time.

 

Super Math One:  Matrix Math – Matrix Math first takes children (3-6 year olds) through counting, naming, quantity and formation of numbers.  In a series of easy steps using the dot matrix they will soon be adding and subtracting.   They will soon be doing math, just add patience and regularity.  Parents should attend too!

Super-Math Three:  Facts-Master –For students 6-12 years old who understand addition and subtraction concepts although their skills may be far from perfect.   They will master all basic skills, borrowing, carrying, multiplication, and division concepts, as well as rapid calculation skills and memory training.  By the end of this course, students who began not knowing how to multiply will be doing many advanced math computations faster than an electronic calculator!  Prerequisite:  Must understand addition/subtraction concepts.  To graduate:  Facts-Master ribbon in add/sub. Parents should attend too!

Super-Math Five:  Factor-Master For teens and advanced pre-teens who can already multiply and divide.  The course teaches mastery of all math operations; powers, factoring, and signed numbers.  Students continue to increase their knowledge of fractions, rapid calculation skills, and memory training.  Parents should attend too!

Note time change:  We had to change the time because Level 3 became too big to teach both classes at one time!

 

Super-Math Seven:  Rapid Calculation – This course is for students who have already done operations with fractions.  They will master all math operations; including factoring, powers, roots, memory training, fractions, and advanced rapid calculation skills.   This is a pre-algebra course for those moving on to Math Eight. Parents should attend too!

Science

 

Robotics/Engineering  - Ready for more robotics?  Expand your robotics skills with more building, more programming, and more strategy.  Learn and practice science and engineering skills with Legos and other materials.  Learn how to use the Lego sensors and how to program your robot more effectively. Ages:  8-14years old. The class is limited to 8 students, and admission is limited to instructor approval.  Parents are invited to attend classes, learn about the competition for next fall, and help coach/chaperone!

CUT-UP CAMP (7-12th grades)  – Curious about worms?  Eyeballs?  Skeletons?  Skin?  Guts?  And other yucky things?  Are you yearning to learn how a fetal pig looks inside and out?   Then we have just the camp for you.  Our resident mad scientist will conduct five days of dissection fun. We provide all of the equipment and supplies.  Bring a notebook and pen; wear comfortable OLD clothes and closed toe shoes.  This class may be used to supplement a high school home taught biology course.

CSI CAMP (4-6th grades) - The CSI camp will teach the basics from fingerprinting techniques to solving codes.  Learn the secrets to performing forensic analysis just like a real crime scene investigator!  Campers will set up a “mock crime scene” complete with yellow crime scene tape and “evidence” stickers.  Students will challenge an eyewitness’ memory skills, draw a composite sketch of a suspect just like a police artist, and master sophisticated fingerprinting techniques.  Campers will also learn to analyze hair and fibers, handwriting, ink chromatography, footprint casts, and dental impressions.  Campers will also learn how “fuming” can make the invisible visible, how to separate pigments in ink, and other fun physics tricks of the trade.  There will be a guest speaker one day.   So, if you are a big fan of CSI or want be a detective, this is the camp for you!  Students should bring a pen and notebook and wear old clothes and closed toe shoes.

DINOSAUR CAMP (1st -4th  grades)  - Step back in time to when giants ruled the Earth.  We’ll look at real fossils and make some of our own.  We’ll discover what types of dinosaurs there were and how scientists figure out if they ate plants or meat, how they walked or swam or flew, and it they stood tall or walked on all fours.  We will study pre-history with science, math, art, and stories.  There will be a paleontologic dig and a reconstruction of the dinosauer fossil.  Wear old clothes or a smock, and wear closed toe shoes.  All supplies provided.

Music

 

Music LessonsTeddy Levron Music,  Interested in learning to play the guitar or keyboard?  Teddy Levron offers music lessons at the HEP Bookstore every Monday in June and July.  Private 30-minute individual lessons are available and are offered on a first come/first served basis.  Contact Mr. Levron at – 713.688.2785 - to arrange lessons and then pay HEP of Texas.  This is a great opportunity to meet Mr. Levron and learn about the HEP Community Lighthouse Band.
