High School HONORS ENGLISH

What is Word in Season?  Word in Season is a four year, college preparatory program written by Patricia McFarlane.  It is an intensive survey course of literature and history starting with the Ancient times and continuing to the Modern Times.  Students who successfully complete each year may receive an honors English and an Honors history credit per year.  Year one students also receive 1 Bible credit.

What is an honors course?  Honors courses cover more difficult materials and move at a faster rater than a regular class.  The reading material is more extensive and the writing is at a college preparatory level.  Students work at a level that is at least 1-2 grade levels higher than the grade level of the course.

Who should take an honors course?  Students who are task oriented and self-motivated should consider taking an honors course.  Students must have self-discipline and a strong work ethic.  Students should also have mastery of the 5 paragraph essay to take years 3 and 4.  5 paragraph essay writing is reviewed at the beginning of WS 1 and will be practiced some in year 1 and extensively in year 2.

Who should not take an honors course?  Students who do not have time to study and complete homework a minimum of 8-10 hours a week should not take honors English.  Students who are not strong in grammar, punctuation, reading, and writing skills should take our regular high school English 1-4 courses.  Our HS English 1-4 courses are college preparatory, but are not as accelerated and writing intensive as our Word in Season Classes.  HS English 3 and 4 will both complete research papers, where as WS 2-4 all complete research papers.

Who teaches HEP's Honors English Classes?  Miss Sauer has a B.A. in Journalism/English; Mrs. Juren has a B.A. in English and an M.Ed. in Administration, and Mrs. Freeman has a B.A. and M.A. in English.

NEW THIS YEAR:  A recommendation form from the previous English teacher has to be presented at the time of registration for a Word in Season class.

MATH

What's hot at HEP?  Super Math!!!!

Don't be left out of the hottest program at HEP this year!  In fact, this may just be the best program in Houston!!!!

HEP of Texas is proud to present Dr. Miles Jones’ Super Math Program. The sessions are offered as a year-long course. All Super Math supplies are available at the HEP Bookstore.  Each family MUST purchase 1 kit per course.  Extra worksheets may be purchased for other children in the same family.  It is a violation of the SUPER MATH copyright to share kits outside of the family or to resell the kits.  Parents should attend most, if not all classes with their students.  We are finding that students with parents have the most success!

Visit Dr. Jones' webpage at:   www.jonesgeniuses.com - You will be impressed!

Students may take Super Math 4, 6, or 8 in the spring if they meet the requirements the course.  Please contact Mrs. Red for information (cred@comcast.net)
